I agree with you, but this is a new wrinkle on an old strategy. Previously it was applied to companies, now it is being applied to standards bodies which should be above all of this (naive, I know) and instead of taking over companies they are appropriating open source standards. This is why I said it is scary. It seems that nothing is sacred or beyond their reach. We should all be concerned. This is the proverbial thin edge of the wedge. If this strategy works then what next?

If you can't beat something, then adopt it and then change it adding Windows specific apis to make it work better with Windows and not work with the other guys. Sun had to sue Microsoft to keep them from taking java out from under them. It's been the standard game plan from almost day one.
