Seems pretty obvious to me. Microsoft will have as much or more
control as they did at the peak of their power 10 or so years ago. I
think they have figured out that it is too costly and darned near
impossible to control all the software. Too many people out there
writing software. They are playing whack-a-mole. Every time they get
the upper hand, a new software player gets involved. Now, if they
control all the standards... Well then, perhaps that will be a bit
easier. Just being in business and turning a profit has never been
the goal of Microsoft. Market domination almost always has.
Anybody remember when they wanted to get involved with banking
software? The software was going to be pretty cheap, they just wanted
a couple of cents royalty on each transaction. Imagine getting taxed
by Microsoft for each check you wrote. Then think for a minute about
Microsoft's security reputation...
