I would suggest trying various live CDs and see if any support your
hardare. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to get information about
what hardware is in a particular laptop, as most retailers will only say
something like 802.b/g/ or whatever, rather than saying Atheros 5007EG
or Intel 2200.
The things most likely to give trouble are the wireless, and sometimes
sound. You can find out the devices using Windows Device Manager.
Card readers can also sometimes be problematic, though DVD drives
shouldn't be.
It's not, sad to say, all that simple. Your best bet would be to get
the brand and model of those devices, then pop them into a google search
bar with Linux, for example, if your card was the AR5007EG wireless
card, do something like
linux ar5007eg
(See, you don't even have to type capitals. :) ).
In that particular case, you'd probably get thousands of hits, but at
any rate, you'd find that it's supported out of the box in the latest
2.6.27-x kernels and would require using MadWifi for earlier kernels.
However, if opening exe files is a necessity, you are better off staying
with Windows. An exe file is a Windows executable file, and usually
won't run on Linux. Although there is WINE, which provides an emulation
layer, it doesn't support all programs, and you specifically, with your
use of all caps, request that it supports ALL exe files.
So, unfortunately, Linux can't do that. You could of course, run Linux
and run VMware or VirtualBox to run your Windows programs, but it really
depends upon how much work you're willing to do.

Willow: Not quite. Exorcism.
