Thanks Roy,

Well Debian didn't do any better than Fedora.  I retried with the Ubuntu Linux
Live CD to be sure it wasn't the DVD drive.  Nope it still booted.  I'm
downloading Yellow Dog now to give it a try.  I wonder why Adobe doesn't want
to issue stuff for the Linux Power PC platform?  Maybe if enough people pay for
Yellow Dog or another Power PC distro, Adobe and others will wake up to us.

Yeah, not working has its good points, I get to ask a neighbor for a ride to
the once-a-month sale.  I bought a few Gateways for $5.00 each, they needed RAM
and hard drive installed.  Others grabbed the $5.00 Dells.  I know my way
around repairing and upgrading, and this was my first Mac.  They had others
with an OS installed for less than $90.00, both Macs and PCs.  Bet you lived in
Reno or could visit, I have the next 3 dates if you're coming this way.

I hope I can find a Debian-based Power PC Linux that will work...
Joan

It sounds like you found a bargain. You have a good attitude about
there being a reward for those who are patient. Many new Linux users are
frustrated with the differences and give up before getting to the reward part,
which is too bad for them.

Thanks,

Well Fedora reboots after install with only a smiley face and "?" flashing in
the middle of the screen. Probably the ATI video card, at least OpenSuse
installed, booted, but couldn't find the Internet until I rebooted, and said no
updates available finally.

Now to see if this is an easy fix, if not on to try the Debian PPC DVD. Maybe
with Apple dropping support for the new OS X from Mac non-Intel CPUs will help
Linux? I can only hope some programmers are given some of these Macs to
practice on, mine cost me only $15.00 at a college surplus sale.

Learning Linux, like anything else is rewarding in the end.

There are twelve PPC distros listed on www.linux.org' s page. A few are only
for that platform. In addition to the ones mentioned below are Mandriva,
Debian, Gentoo, MkLinux, Yellow Dog, ELinOS, SourceMage, PLD, and Intrinsyc. Go
to: http://www.linux. org/dist/ list.html and input PPC in the platform box.
You can also sort Distrowatch by architecture and it has many more listed such
as CentOS, Crux, Rock, Slackintosh, T2 SDE and Vine. So there is quite a bit of
choice. As for how good they are...

Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Mac G4 Linux Live CDs

Hi Everyone,

I came across one of these towers with 384 RAM, now it has 1 gig RAM that I
knew to be either PC100 or PC133 depending on what was needed. The CPU is 450
MHz, the 20 gig HD no longer booted OS X, so I found the Ubuntu 6.06 Live CD to
test it out. Now I'm installing the latest OpenSuse PowerPC DVD.
Unfortunatedly, there were no updates, or did I burn the wrong iso file?

I have the latest Fedora PPC to try on another hard drive, since I have very
little Mac software I wonder if I'll go that route. But it is disappointing
there are so few Live or install distros for this plateform. Anybody have some
favorites links for new MacPPC Linux users? Or other info?

Thanks,

Joan in Reno
