Ubuntu does not use rpms. Ubuntu is a Debian based distro and therefore uses debs instead. If you tried to install rpms it would fail. The problems with Youtube have to do with flash. If you installed the wrong flash then it can adversely affect installing the correct one. Go to Synaptic in System | Administration. Once in, search (not quick search) for flash and 'remove completely' every instance. Then install flashplugin-nonfree. You should also install ubuntu-restricted-extras from the Meta Packages (multiverse) group. If you have other desktops such as KDE/XFCE installed then you will need the restricted-extras for kubuntu/xubuntu as well. Software in Linux works differently as you are finding out. Unlike Windows there are no executable file types like exes, etc. Instead files are packaged together using a package manager. The package manager takes care of the details. You just select what you want from the list in Synaptic. Right-Click to install and when you are done selecting click in Apply. The program will be unpacked, put in a safe place and a menu icon will appear in the appropriate place. Basically never hunt for files on the internet and try to install from outside of the repositories (where Synaptic downloads from), at least until you are willing to learn how to fix a broken system. Linux security comes at the cost of tighter controls. You need to provide a password to install and de-install and programs are kept in the root file system where nobody can mess with them. It is different, but trust me, it is way more secure and you will find it easier once you get used to it. Windows files can still be installed by downloading exes and zips, but first you need to install a Windows compatibility layer by installing Wine from Synaptic. BTW, an alternative to Synaptic is Add/ Remove at the bottom of the Applications menu. It uses the same approach but looks a bit different. If you are running 64-bit expect multimedia problems as there are no multimedia programs written for some file types. If multimedia is your thing it is easiest and better to install the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. It will save you headaches in the end. You can install 32-bit programs in 64-bit Ubuntu if you install some APIs and then you can and should install the 32-bit version of Firefox instead of the 64-bit one. This will sort out many of your multimedia woes. See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1174435 I hope this helps.
