My all-time topper was when I got a distribution called Morphix to run
full GUI on a 133MHz Pentium, with only 64MB or ram.

512MB is a good operating point, you can get a lot of distros to run
on that. You will want to avoid any distribution using the KDE4
desktop, like OpenSuSE 10+, those are too graphics-heavy. If you want
to try something that isn't Gnome (like Ubuntu, LinuxMint, and others
are), go for KDE3.x (search for kdebase3 package in distrowatch.com).

I'm using "PCLinuxOS 2007" on several machines and recommend that. If
you can find Mandriva Spring 2008, it's worth a try, but Mandriva
themselves have already buried it in favor of their KDE4-based 2009
release, which you should avoid, as noted above.

Or, you could go for something XFCE based. My current favorite
lightweight (XFCE) distro is zenwalk (dot org), I'm running it on a
box similar to yours (800MHz cpu, 384MB ram, 80GB HD). Puppy Linux is
another nice one.
