You likely have the wrong graphics card driver or you tried to use compiz with
a driver that did not support compositing. There are many discussions and
possible fixes, if you google it. One such discussion is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=714034

Note: you can start another session with CTRL-Alt-F5 and this will give you a
command prompt from which to work. You can reconfigure xorg.conf as follows:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

If this does not work then you may have a problem with compiz, if that is
installed. Before installing a new graphics driver make sure that you have the
right one. Look in the repositories and the cards are listed in the
description. Use a restricted driver over open source where possible as it will
give better performance and offer more features.

Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Latest ubuntu upgrade causes blank screen while booting

Hi,

I have just updated my ubuntu to latest version, on my laptop. Now the
problem is that the screen goes 'all-white' after the boot. And hence I
am not presented the login prompt.

FYKI, i was using the FGLX drivers for my ATI display card. These were
working fine in earlier version.

Can someone help me troubleshoot it ? I am new to ubuntu.
