my mailboxes and account settings from XP to Thunderbird in Mint?

My way isn't very elegant, but should work. There is a migration tool when you
install that usually does this for you, but you can do it manually if you have
access to both drives.

In Windows you find your settings for Thunderbird which is likely in a hidden
folder in your Documents and Settings\username. It is called Application Data.
Then go to \Thunderbird\ Profiles and the folder will either be called Default
or end in .default. You don't want this folder, but all of the contents which
can be dragged and dropped into your Home directory of Mint in the hidden
Thunderbird folder which will begin with a dot. However you have to have the
show hidden files option open which in Nautilus is under View on the Menubar. I
have found that this will not work until you have opened Thunderbird at least
once as it tends to overwrite the files that you copied. When you do this it
will create a profile in Mint that will look similar to the Windows one. Then
you can just copy the files from the Windows folder to your Mint one, electing
to overwrite everything. The same method will work for Firefox, but it will be
in a different folder called
Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/Default (or similar) on the Windows end and
.mozilla/firefox/ (no profiles) in Mint. It is a good idea to use Foxmarks or
similar add-on in Firefox to maintain and synchronize bookmarks when you are
dual booting or using several computers.

A firewall comes with Ubuntu pre-installed. I assume that Mint does the same.
It uis calld ufw and you should install an additional package to maintain it,
called gufw. It is a good idea, although Linux is quite secure, because you can
never be too cautious with your personal finances and whatever that people
might want to intercept. Viruses and trojans are not a concern. If you don't
like ufw, then you cna de-install it and there are several others to choose
from such as Firestarter or Gurar Dog.
