The package manager takes care of the details and puts things where they belong. You just need to supply your password and choose the programme or package from the list. The best way to mess up your system is to try to install programmes outside of the repositories. The repositories are managed, maintained and are safe and secure. > > Roy > > > <snip>
Roy, I respect you and have archived many of your posts in the past but have to disagree here. I have for instance downloaded and installed an Oracle database under Linux. Sorry, not DEB or RPM file there. Also, ISOs that I don't want to burn right now. I download those. User manuals and other documents in PDF format. I download those. In other words, you are only thinking of the narrow list of what you might want to add to your Linux system. For me, when I can, I do use synaptic. When it does not make sense, I download to a specific place. If it is software, I then install it from there.
