I'm not sure Debian's minimum requirements but I have experienced Debian
installing where other's have failed. Whatever you do, steer clear of
any graphics intensive desktops such as gnome, kde, and xfce. You'll
have greater success with a *window manager* like blackbox, fluxbox, or
something minimalistic. Nothing graphics intensive for sure. If this old
computer doesn't have a
cd rom maybe you could hook up an external cd rom because debian has a
small (I think under 200MB) netinstall cd. Heck, debian can even be
installed from floppy disk. Others have given you good
options too. What the heck, try 'em all if you're feeling frisky.
