installed it should be installed through Synaptic and it automatically
generates checksums when it creates an iso file. To verify this create
an iso with it and then open it from Tools | burn ISO image and it
should load the checksum and confirm it automatically. Brasero, the
Gnome burner, may do it as well, but I don't use it so can't say.

I used Brasero for the first time last night to burn a copy of Mint
5 for a co-worker who's having problems with Vista <grin>. Yep, I'm
already recruiting! Anyway, after doing the burn, Brasero checked the
integrity of the disk which, I assume, included running an md5. This
probably isn't a safe assumption, but just thought I'd report.
