Hello Deepak and everybody else,

I had similar though and was preparing a message about
it.

<<<
Are we just generating a list of apps for LUGs to
choose from or this something that new users can go to
and print out for app info?
>>>
My idea is, mostly for new users.
Or for LUG members that received a question from a new
user and do not know if such app exist for Linux.

<<<
...before we end up rebuilding freshmeat or linuxberg
from scratch.
>>>
I agree.
freshmeat, linuxberg, filewatcher are great and we
have no reason to reproduce what they did.

I started to worry when some people started to send me
suggestion for hackers apps.
I was thinking :
"Would I suggest apps such as the "cDc BackOriffice"
to a new user of Win 9x ?

Probably not, at least not as an introduction.

But I also had for policy of not restricting what
people wanted me to post on the apps list.
I am not a censure judge.

So, we definitely need to rethink the "how" and "what"
of the DB.

<<<
If we're putting together something for new users, do
we have so much info that we'll end up overloading
them?
>>>
I think we need to provide some basic info.
Just enough to help them to figure out which one is
the one for them, so it is good to have a small choice
of similar apps.
And mostly, where to get it. This is "gold" for a new
user.
If you want me to shorten the fields content, I can do
it.

We can also narrow the choice to apps that are known
to be great, by several people of this list.

<<<
we can instead create a list of equivalent apps?
>>>
Bill, (I think) had the idea too.
I proposed to had a fields for which app also exist on
others platforms, (WPerfect, Applix, Netscape,...).
We could merge these both ideas.

Users will probably feel more comfortable to know that
Netscape for example exist and has almost the same
U.I.

<<<
What I'm picturing is a table...
>>>
I started the list with a table idea.
It is good, except it may not be convenient on a small
(14") screen or piece of paper.

<<<
...how many equivalent apps do we list? Should we just
stick to the more popular and well known ones?
>>>
I think you are on the right track, except one issue,
I can see.
Let suppose you have an "architect" that come to LDD.
He is interrested about an apps similar to AutoCAD.
Does CAD apps are part of the "more popular and well
known ones" ?

Where is the limit ?

Does a payroll program fit in this category ?

More though...

        Eugene
