general tips regarding linux installation,
all from experience ;-)
First, get hold of a good partitioner, it helps tremendously, try
http://come.to/ranish
Second, if u r now installing a linux n/w and want linux to coexist with
win, loadlin is a good alternative. In case of hdds with old bios and huge
number of cylinders ( my case, my hdd has >33K cylinders, while bios
supports only 1024),consider loadlin as an alternative
sample: i have linux on /dev/hda8
c:\linux>loadlin vmlinuz(or bzimage) root=/dev/hda8 ro
in case of pcq cd's copy loadlin from DOSUTILS dir(its in the zip file).
vmlinuz is also in the same direc.
dont forget the "ro" option (for read only, dont worry, its a safety
measure :-).
if u compile a new kernel, the new bzimage file should be copied to this
dir).
Other requirements:
- Create a linux native and swap partition using either ranish(link above)
or partition mgr.
- Install LILO to linux partition, not on MBR. ( if u want linux to boot ,
set linux native partition to active partition, again using either above or
FDISK)
- Note the linux native's number (/dev/hd??, i didnt get the proper word)
- Unzip the loadlin zip to some dir from windows, and then copy the vmlinuz
file from the cd to this dir.
- simplification: create batch files, or add an option in autoexec.bat
Sincerely,
Vinil
Further clarifications reqd. email me.
BTW, been experimenting with all the PCQ cds -2, since Dec 95, and can say
with authority that they dont play well in my Philips AZ1010 CD system.

Ok, a clean slate is the best slate
