Yesterday I tried installing Red Hat Linux 5.2 from PCQ March CD.

I have a 4.3 GB Hdd and have nothing installed on it. I started with
booting from the CD itself and it booted perfectly. I continued till
Disk Druid, and accepted to use it because PCQ recommended using it.
Further I don't know how to use Linux Fdisk, so I continued with Disk
Druid.

My first problem started here. What is the meaning of "Mount on" ? Is it
something similar to Drive C,D,E....etc as in DOS ? Anyway I just left it
blank and first created a swap partition of 128 MB. But when creating
another partition for Linux native, it did not allow me to keep "Mount
on" blank, and said to insert some values in it and, should start with
"/". I did so and created a Linux native with "/" of 500 MB. Then I also
created a "/user" of 1 GB. Although I created these partitions, I don't
know what is "Mount on " and "/" , etc.

Next I was stuck with installing my video card. I have a AGP Trident card
975 with 4 MB RAM. Also, I could not in make out what is "Chip Set" in
the card. How do I find it ? The system asked me to allow auto check the "chipset"
but couldn't find it. I read a mail on this list that someone else was
also having a same problem with the above mentioned card. So, for the
time beign can I set with some other card make of Trident which are listed on the
installation ?

Last, I was stuck with LILO. I was given two option. One was to Load it as
Master Loader and second to Load it at First Sector......etc.. I took the
first option and continued with the remaining procedure without any problem.
But in the end it said it was not able to load LILO. So, I re-tried it
with the second option but still it gave an error. Can't figure out what
the problem is.

Anyway since , I had made a boot floppy (When it asked me make one during
the installation) I was able to boot into the system and it did start.
But since I have never ever used a unix or linux system I didn't know
what to do .

How does one run a program in Linux ?
How does one start the GUI mode of using the system ?

BTW, Can anyone out here show me a actually working Linux system . This
will help me in seeing how one uses a linux system. I am ready to go to
any corner of Mumbai just to see one. I know I sound like a real nerd,
but belive me, as far as linux is concerned, I am a nerd.

Hope to see a silver lining.

Rajen.
