I have a suggestion.

(If you NT system is newly installed, and you can afford to reinstall NT)
Try installing LILO from Linux again. (I am not sure about NT, but I had
this incident with Win95, and it worked)
To boot into Linux, use a boot floppy (which can be made using the
utilities from the /dosutils directory from the CD where you have the
Linux distro..)

For sound card configuration, try the "sndconfig" program.

About the various Window managers and desktop mmanagers, .. well, since
the meet is near, that'd be the best place to ask ;)
