No I was talking about stripping the first sector of Linux root
partition(Not NT). And this way you NT Loader (which is in MBR) can boot
Linux by reading the bootsect.lnx (dump of the first boot sector of linux
partition). And there also you have the option to boot with Linux or NT.
Basically when you install NT, it thinks that it's the only OS (M$ monopoly!
huh..) and over writes the MBR with the NT loader. So if you have Linux on
some other partition (with LILO on MBR) you are stuck. Thus the HOWTO
suggests to install LILO on root partition itself. At least Linux does give
option to install LILO on the root partition. So why not make use of this
feature. This way LILO install/uninstall is also easy.
Also let's say you NT partition is in NTFS. Then can LILO recognize that
partition? I really don't know whether LILO is capable of booting NT. As
of today there is no support for NTFS in Linux. There are some alpha drivers
thru which you can get NTFS support. But it's still under development. May
be LILO doesn't need to see all those file systems.. and just has some BIOS
calls to jump to the specified device and execute the reqd instructions to
load the specified OS. Any idea on what goes behind?
One question: you said you have installed LILO on your root partition, then
what is there in MBR? LILO/ NTLDR? Was your NT filesystem FAT?
