i have NT in my MBR. and the file system is FAT not NTFS

Linux at present can mount NTFS as read only.

Also let's say you NT partition is in NTFS. Then can LILO recognize that
partition? I really don't know whether LILO is capable of booting NT.   As
of today there is no support for NTFS in Linux. There are some alpha
drivers
thru which you can get NTFS support. But it's still under development.  May
be LILO doesn't need to see all those file systems.. and just has some BIOS
calls to jump to the specified device and execute the reqd instructions to
load the specified OS. Any idea on what goes behind?
One question: you said you have installed LILO on your root partition, then
what is there in MBR? LILO/ NTLDR?  Was your NT filesystem  FAT?
