As promoters of linux, you should know that linux is still in 2.2.13
kernel. 6.0 is the version of the distro Red Hat I suppose.

do you ping using the IP address or the domain name of the ISP? Try
pinging giasbmm01.vsnl.net.in Then try 202.54.1.18
If both these work, then ping www.yahoo.com
If the domain pings don't work, but the IP works, then you have not set up
yoour DNS. You should set it to what your ISP has asked you to. If you
do not know what it is, 202.54.1.18 or 202.54.1.30 is a good bet.

Does it say direct connection to lan, or direct connection to internet?
Try browsing with a different browser - like lynx or the browser with KDE.
Try fetching mail from a POP account using mutt or fetchmail.
