You've understood the situation pretty well, with a booboo. Sendmail is
not the problem here... the From: line is. Reply-To can be rewritten.
Basically, Pine causes all this anguish since it won't write From: lines
correctly. If using something like Outlook or Netscape Mail across an
internal network, using sendmail as the relay, there is no problem with
from lines either, since they are written correctly. The "smart host"
(read VSNL) will try to resolve the sender in the From: line. It doesn't
care what the local sendmail identifies itself as (i.e helo domain.com
doesn't matter)
I'm sure I've confused things even further, but I think everyone
understands and can't really communicate that perfectly :)
