Hi gang,

made a few more changes. Also taken Nagarjuna's suggestions into
account.

{ It's gone a little longer than the first though }

Bombay Linux Users Group <www.ilug-bom.org>
 - press release Article on LINUX

Linux is the new buzzword. Everybody wants a piece of it and all want to jump on the
bandwagon. Linux is all about opportunity. opportunity to experience how powerful an
Operating System can be. From a Userfriendly Interface to Absolute computing power ,
from a high-end server to a basic desktop system, from a full fledged multi-processor
operating system to a single processor based system
- Linux can answer your questions.

The best way to learn more about Linux is to work with it. Many Distributions are
freely available for download... ( but thats only possible if you have high bandwidth
as your talking at least 400 - 600 MB ). The more popular way is to get a CD copy of
any distribution and install. Todays Distributions have graphical Interfaces for
Installation. Make sure you do your homework first though. Although there is support
for almost all devices ... there are always a few which can through up a suprise. But
that should not deter you because if
support is not built-in ( and note the "IF"), somewhere , someone is feverishly
working to get that done. Hey, if you know programming, heres your chance to be the
first to write support for your particular device - but be quick about it - because
as you read this, rest assured that someone else is already working on it. On that
topic it would be worthwhile to examine just why LINUX is so stable and "refreshing to
work with" as a friend once told me. It could be because there is no one organisation
working on it. LINUX has escentially
been developed by a number people and organisations using it and writing code that
they would use themselves. After all a job worth doing is worth doing well right ?
I could go on as I sit here happily typing in X-windows... on my Linux system, with my
favourite music playing ( ya know, my soundcard does sound somehow better in Linux...
but maybe its just me... ) ... but then this article would never end...

If you need help... or just get a chance to talk to people using Linux, there are
many user groups and mailing lists to help you out.
We also have our very own users group in Bombay which you can join and interact with
other linux users. We are a group of people who have worked with linux in one way or
another, end-users to gurus, we are all part of the Linux community of Bombay. We have
witnessed first hand the beauty, elegance and sheer power of Linux.
Please do check us out at <www.ilug-bom.org> . We usually meet around once a month to
discuss Linux and get a chance to chat with fellow Linux enthusiasts. But it's not
just about that, we also have workshops to help people get a feel of Linux, like the
one we are conducting for VJTI students next week. Then there is the website to be
run, the mailing list to be maintained. Helping out fellow members etc. As a group we
also wish to conduct more workshops targeted at Cybercafe's , Students, PC Assemblers,
etc.
Its a chance to grow and learn. Basically ... Its a lot of fun.
