What's so bad with HBCSE? Some of us live out in New Bombay. If you're
holding the meet in Worli, I'm not planning to take a two hour journey
on the harbour line in the afternoon only to attend a talk on Squid,
Samba, qmail, Zope or whatever the latest fad is. I'd much rather read a
HOWTO and get my clarifications from IRC.
Did I mention that I really hate sitting in a chair at a
meeting/seminar? I'm usually found seated on the floor in a corner in a
typical meeting at work.
Our meets are places for action. There's no point in doing things that
can be done better online (Mailing list not interactive enough? I'm
setting up an IRC server just as soon as I feel it secure enough.
Everyone's welcome on board).
Ever notice how at the end of a typical meet, everyone huddles into
groups discussing their latest achievements and clearing doubts that
they would never have bothered to ask on the list? The reason this
happens is simple: people tend to be more comfortable speaking their
mind in a free-wheeling conversation than in a speech.
There is something to be learnt here on what to do at our meetings. I'm
not an expert on community building, but I do know that I've been bored
to death at every meeting I've attended so far.
I therefore propose that we let everyone have a chance to gab about
their latest experiences, be it trouble getting something to work, cool
new software, or just neat hacks. If you can get your computer over to
show off something, that would be really cool (I sure wish I could bring
mine). Try to recall how Sandesh gets hysterical everytime someone
mentions databases. Our meetings would be fun if more people did that,
on the subjects they love. My list currently contains Zope, EveryBuddy,
Jabber, Sawmill/Sawfish and Emacs.
Comments, anyone?
