Glad to see this thread has jolted a lotta people out of their stupour. The
sudden flurry of activity and traffic on our ML is a sign of good health.
My few cents based on the various opinions of the list members -
1. Most people seem to be against collecting a fixed amount, and their
reasoning seems plausible. So let us have a voluntary contribution (as
Nagarjun suggests). No pressure, no accountability, no finger pointing.
2. We can ask for the contribution from time to time as expenses come up.
Right now its 1500/- for domain registeration. The next expense could be
registering our LUG as a society. Dont know how much thats gonna cost tho,
IANAccountant.
3. Please get new members to the meet. It absolutely does not matter whether
the person is linux aware, or a Windows advocate, or whatever. I am positive
that by the end of the meet, the person would have his/er grey cells working
overtime. And hey, at the least get your girlfriend/wife to the meet, as a
jolly outing !! (wish i could get mine, but she's in moscow ;-)
3. Venue: let us stick to HBCSE. For one, it is accessible from any part of
Bombay/New Bombay. Second, it is a nice cozy place with a good seminar hall,
and its also the unofficially designated venue for ILUG-Bom activities. We
have members coming from South mumbai, western suburbs, thane, new bombay
etc. It absolutely does not make sense to keep shifting the venues to suit
the convenience of members. It is not an everyday event. We meet once in a
month or month and a half. I am sure that as busy as one might be, devoting
a day for the ilug-bom meet once in a month should not be an issue, even if
it involves travelling that extra bit to reach HBCSE.
And for everyone's information, it is a very expensive seminar hall that is
usually rented out to corporates. Nagarjun has made a special request to the
director of HBCSE for giving it to us for free, for our meets. I would say,
come once, and im sure you'll like it.
5. As for specific projects, the lug memebers would sure be travelling to
the specific venue. Eg's: seminar at VJTI, seminar at TIS, the next project
at ISCKON (hopefully), etc etc. But these are specific projects and not
meets.
6. Areawise lugs - I am of the opinion that as long as it does not break up
ILUG-Bom and affect its activities, no problem. Moreover, if something
interesting is being done by an area-lug, the list members should be kept
posted on that.
7. As for the online community, right now we are connected only via the ML.
How about having a #ILUG-Bom or something like that (hey Prakash, are'nt you
a TCC at talkcity ?? Can you do something about it ?? And Satya, how about
talking to a few CSA's and CCC's at talkcity ?? Im way out of touch with
most of them.). Kiran, can you arrange for an irc channel for us at undernet
?
Any other suggestions ?
8. We need to spice up our website which has stagnated itself to death.
Someone please take it up. We can put up howto's and work-arounds and cool
stuff that list members have done.
Thats about it for now. Expect bouquets, brickbats > /dev/null ;-)
Cheerio,
Sagar.
