iRiver is not exactly a lost cause as it does support firmware upgrades.
I was able to get H340 to play .avi and divx files after firmware upgrades.
Also after installing rockbox on the player, I was able to dual boot the
player. I made a post on how to do it in easy steps.

You can get the firmware upgraded to korean version which are more
advanced compared to the US version and get support for various
formats. Also if you hang out on the misticriver forums they have good
howtos on how to support new codecs with rockbox. So you might not
just get support for ogg but also for FLAC, dirac and speex formats.
But beware as rockbox builds are currently "beta quality" and my
player used to crash once in a while. I would recommend the iRiver
players as it is more hackable and less proprietary compared to the iPod.
