I did not have the lines so I copy pasted them and rebooted the machine.
Now after doing 'sudo compiz-manager' I am able to move the cubes.
Thanks for the tip. There is one little issue of title bars getting
knocked off and even after closing compiz, I have to use the File ->
Exit route instead of the close button on the title bar. Even after all
this, there is resiidue in the task bar. It goes away only after logging
out and relogging in.

Further update. I ran sudo compiz-manager from the run dialog and as 
long as I am in compiz, everything is fine. I noticed that though each 
of my 4 desktops has different wallpapers, the cube shows 4 faces of the 
same desktop. I like the way windows can be dragged from one face to 
another.

Video player had a problem that it showed the desktop with icons instead 
of the movie. For that the libxine1 package was updated with a new 
version in apt. Now video plays properly in compiz.
