Desktop Environment doesn't matter here. All of them used and still
use workspaces.
Compiz provides Viewports with similar functionality. It provides 4
Viewports per workspace i.e. 4 sides of a cube. I believe now that
isn't a fixed number anymore, you can change that upto 26 if I recall
correctly.
Thus, what is happening is you have 4 workspaces * 4 viewports = 16 views.
