I don't know the answer to your question (a) (I assume the part about "looking 
for one which works" below, was supposed to be (b)), I have tried a very 
commonly available intex web cam (the one retailing for Rs. 750/- on ebay.in) 
and that works with gspca.

Also, for compatibility lists, look here:

(note that the page even has pointer to compatibility lists of web cams not 
directly supported by the gspca driver.

Actually, IMHO, the best would be to not have to bother about knowing whether 
something would be functional when buying.
