I will write about my experience with older machines, lot of things on web
for Foss + old hardware.

I've worked with CENT OS 4.1 on a 900 mhz p3 512 ram machine doing
qt/c++/opengl development. Machine was slow for testing but ok enuf for
devlopment, had kde 3.5 that worked well. However centos is short on
packages by default and you would have to install them once. But it works on
lesser hardware.

In general u can try older distros...
