I've been trying to do the same thing for the past 5 months. I would like to use the laptop for academic presentations. I need the laptop display at the native 1280xwhatever resolution, and the video out at 800x600. This hasn't worked for me. I agree that changing xconfig files every time sucks.

Surely someone has figured this out????

    InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad"

So far i found out, what every i put as the first Screen in the ServerLayout section is the resolution picked for both displays. So if i only want to run the external monitor then i can with out a problem, but i still cant get both displays on a diffrent resolution. The reason im still trying for this, rather than except what ive already got is at present i would need to change xorgs config file everytime i want to switch displays. If you see where im coming from
