I, too, am out of warranty by about 10 weeks. I don't run my
notebook on battery that often. When I first got it, though, I would
get about 3 hours from a fully charged battery. Over the past few
months I've gotten the sense that the lifetime has shortened, but I
never took the time to measure it. Then, two and a half weeks ago, it
started loosing significant charge within *minutes* of running it off
the battery. (And the battery would run very hot.) I'm now lucky to
get 40 minutes out of the battery.
Upon hearing about the battery recall, I went to the web page but
found I did not qualify. Since these symptoms are the same as the ones
being recalled, I wanted to talk to an HP representative about it.

So, today I called up the HP Mobile Battery Pack Replacement
Program (888-404-7398). Upon explaining the situation to the woman I
talked with, she said she couldn't do anything and forwarded me to HP
Support (800-474-6836). There, I talked to a very nice gentleman by
the name of John. Before we got to the reason I was calling, he told me
that he saw my computer was out of warranty and that he'd have to
forward me to the paid support lines. I quickly explained why I was
calling -- that my battery was exhibiting similar symptoms to the ones
being recalled. He saw that the batteries for the R3000 were on the
recall list, but I had to explain to him that apparently only certain
batteries were eligible for replacement. He offered to look into it for
me by talking with the Battery Pack Replacement Program people.
He put me on hold for 3 or so minutes and then came back
apologizing that they wouldn't take my battery back. He was very kind
about it, but basically told me I'd have to buy a new one. He forwarded
me to a HP Out-Of-Warranty Sales person who looked up the 12-cell DP390A
model battery on HPshopping.com: $149. BUT, HPshopping.com was out of
stock, so she offered to get me one from the HP parts department... for
$210!
Needless to say, I didn't take that offer.

I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do.
