Spartan or not,

It has not been said, but it sounds like Slackware is already installed on
these machines.  Is that true?  If that is true, do these machines have
files that need to be backed up and does it have to be Slackware?

Assuming Slackware is not required, I agree with Chris, I would recommend
Ubuntu for desktops.  You can go Slackware, but if you are not comfortable
setting up Linux, Ubuntu would make more sense both in setting things up and
in maintaining these over time.  I would be more than happy to help, but I
am out of state.   If this is for a business, I would probably go with
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 because it is the LTS (Long Term Support) version.

The things you want setup are very simple to do.  The only thing that might
take sometime is if any of the hardware requires special settings or
drivers.  Installing the packages listed above can be done with one
command.  The other questions I would ask are how many computers are we
talking?  Are they all the same or different (not a huge deal)?

Assuming the hardware is all compatible, there is no "how well" in this
situation.  The person that in question either can or cannot do the job.
