That is weird. The xf86-video-nv driver should of worked. It is a generic Nvidia driver that has no 3d support and no 2d acceleration. Also, the xf86-video-vesa driver should of worked too. Fedora uses the Nouveau driver. It has 2d acceleration on most cards, and no to little 3d support on some cards. Nouveau is still buggy. I'm surprised Fedora shipped it as the default driver for Nvidia cards. I'm glad it worked for you. If you want, you can always file a bug report with Ubuntu. They will probably be interested in your case since a lot of people have Nvidia cards. Be sure to run lspci to get the pciid when you create a bug report.

I had all kinds of troubles with graphics. The jockey GUI had two drivers, I chose one, and it said it failed for one reason or t'other...then I tried the other one and it didn't work, either. When I restarted the interface, it showed four drivers, two of which seemed to be meta-entries for the original two. The meta-entries were selected, but it said they still wouldn't work.
