My guess is, if he's on a server, he doesn't have an X system to use Synaptic on. Besides, the CLI experience will do him good! He seemed to have gotten fairly far into compiling on his own, at least. OP: In agreement with the rest of the responders, LAMP is probably supported in your distro's package manager somewhere. Find the package(s) and install (it|them).
