I agree that catering to the lowest denominator is probably not the
best approach, but it must definitely be a major consideration for the
fact that if a Linux desktop is to become a major player in the
desktop OS industry, then it must do exactly that. This is exactly why
it isn't. If you look at the M$ and Mac biz models, you can see that
this is the secret<actually not a secret> to their success.

That brings up another issue: Memory. If that is the primary purpose
of FOSS OS, then you need to cater to people who can't afford that
latest greatest hardware. The current economic slump will even play a
factor in the business world. I know that Ubuntu is very popular in
Brazil and other Foreign countries, and many of those users can't
afford the Cadillac of computers. Shuttleworth is from South Africa,
and he's catering to the global community in such a way as to cause
his software project to become a real player.

The OS must be able to run efficiently on limited resources. Even if
you have an Uber desktop. There is no point in having 15 versions of
every kind of software. <exaggeration> As I stated before, all you
have to do is type apt-get install synaptic... into the command line.
For those who don't know how to do that, it's probably better for them
to use the Software Center until they learn. With that said, since
Synaptic is of the same type application as Software Center, I think
that it should be on the first page of the Software Center with an
explanation of its purpose and capabilities.
