I was also thinking they are using a font that a "regular" printer doesn't recognize. If I was you, I will ask them the check the document they are creating and see if the software they are using is adding any Security or PCL content.

Like I said, I'm not a printer language expert. But I thought what happened to me could help you.

Have a good day.

Hugh,

I think that may TOTALLY explain it. So I have been thinking that the
problem was on the linux side. I will test with some an older printers.

So if that is the problem, then do I need to tell the people who
created the PDF to create a UFR not a PCL compatible file? What
instructions would I give them?

If you wanted to test the document, go to www.bettsmetalbuildings.com
and download the New Metal Building Pricing brochure on the home page.

thanks very much

I don't know if this is going to help you, but I had the same
issue with a printer with HP, Kyocera and Canon printers printing from
Windows and Linux.

The reason why I was getting that printout was because the PDF
document I wanted to print came in PCL. We contacted the canon support
and they said the new Canon printers, support UFR by default and they
don't understand the "old" PCL language and in order to make our
printer recognize that, we needed to buy a PCL kit.

I ran with the same issue with Kyocera, but they said they don't
have any solution at the moment (at least for the Kyocera 4020dn).

I tried the same document on HP printers and basically the old
ones (2300 and 2420) print fine, but not the new one.

I tried to open the document using gimp and it worked. So I asked
the support (Kyocera and Canon) and both said that the printer is
actually receiving an image and not a command so the printer
understands it and prints it.

I'm not a printer expert, but when I ran on that situation, I was
looking in the same place you're looking right now (the drivers) and
the issue was actually on the printer's side.

I hope this helps you a little bit.

The page that gives the error might be a different page size
than the other pages. For example the page might be legal size. If this
is the case, when the printer gets to the page, it tries to switch page
sizes but it can't because it is not supported. Just my thought.

I've seen a similar issue with Kyocera printers but with
Windows and pdf's. Had to do with the KPDL settings. Well PDL for any
other printers.

Check if you can change it in the settings. Should be a
drop
down with 3-4 choices. Try the others choices.
