talking about the Replicant project, which supposedly seeks to have a
completely open source version of Android that runs on Android
compatible hardware (yet doesn't require any proprietary binary blobs to
support the hardware). Has anyone else heard of this yet? Does anyone
care about this kind of stuff?

It's currently running in my pocket! This is also the reason I'm typing on Trisquel GNU/Linux as we speak--no blobs, nothing non-free. The funny thing is, the only non-free software I have on the laptop was required for me to start working on free software :P

FYI, if you do want to make the switch to Replicant, be ready to give up some amenities. I never had a data plan, so I don't know whether that works, but the camera and wifi drivers aren't included, so you either have to live without (which would be my suggestion) or flash the drivers yourself (which isn't too hard).
