Thanks, Ann, and all.

Unfortunately I need a complete Windows7 installation.  I did manage to get it 
installsed; I bit the bullet, and just went ahead and ran the Kubuntu 12-04 
setup.  It almost magically worked after I resized the main partition.  Then 
it wouldn't boot but I rand the repair Windows option off the restore 
partition, and now I get the grub startup.  I can choose either Windows 7 or 
Kubuntu; both work.

I have another question, and I'll post in another thread as it's more than a 
bit offtopic (but I'd bet we have members with experience and the answers).
