That is very odd since the Ubuntu installer has the option to reformat
the drive, removing all previous partitions.

Is it possible that the BIOS has some kind of anti-virus configuration
which prevents modifying the partition table?  Here's a post about
someone having a similar issue as you describe with Windows XP:
