So you are saying that you have no virtual terminals on tty1-6? This
can't be? Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 and see if you get a prompt, F7 is your gui.
If I just insulted you I'm sorry, but there surely has to tty's there. I
was suggesting you log in to tty2(Ctrl+Alt+F2), stop GDM then run startx

What version of udev do you have?(sudo udevd -V) Since when has smxi
become a replacement for apt-get? It a script that actually uses apt-get
or aptitude as far as I know. It's great for things but all it does is
run a dist-upgrade for you :o)
