I had 10.04 freezing on a laptop (much different specs from what you described though). I moved to 10.10 and since I haven't had any issues. I didn't spend much time troubleshooting as it was random lock up so it was difficult to say exactly what it was. I've also run Mint 10 on it. I know 10.10 isn't LTR, but it worked for me so I stuck with it.
The suggestion earlier about booting to a Live Debian CD is a good place to start. If debian doesn't freeze you know it's a distro specific issue and you may want to try something else. If it does then you know there's some deeper hardware issue. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Linux Users Group.
