Im on 10.04 for nearly a year already, but I'm not geting your symptoms Ben. I even have Gnome-Shell (stand-down Gnome / KDE fans) on it with hardly a problem except mutter bitching from time to time.
Granted I'm on Core 2 Duo not Pentium 4. Try to check if here are core dumps generated and check what the causes are. The most logical thing to do in cases like this is to go and check the logs before anything else. Good luck.
