Boot from a LiveCD like Ubuntu.  It has a memory testing utility on the 
disk.  It may find you have bad memory.  That will cause freezing.  

If that tests OK, then honestly, just like in Windows, you can chase a 
problem to no end, then thinking you fixed it, it will start misbehaving 
again.

Save your /home/User to a network share or to an external drive.....then 
reload from a fresh CD.

Once you have a KNOWN base to work from and no extra services/program, see 
if your system still misbehaves.
