Mike, It doesn't matter where you are in the directory tree, as long as you use sudo like I told you in my message above and type your password in correctly when it asks for it, it should work. You won't have to worry about while installing flash, because I believe it's a package with no dependencies, but if you do install packages with dependencies, apt will show you what they are and ask you if you want it to download and install all the dependencies.
Also - if you want to use apt to probe the repositories and search for other packages to install, do 'apt-get search <package name>' (without the quotes). This can also be done from anywhere in the directory tree. If you have any other questions about apt, please don't hesitate to ask.
