was the printer's driver loaded? what's the output of 'lsusb'? sharing the printer over the network using cups is the way to go as Jeremiah mentioned.
I have a Canon Pixma iP2700 and its a bitch to make it work on linux. Canon doesnt have linux love im afraid.
