If a person works for the love of his job and also manages to earn good money in return, then there is nothing better. As far as commercial applications go, Red Hat is number one, followed by SuSE and then Debian. > go out > there and explore Debian and especially Slackware for > a while. I personally believe that if you need a deep understanding of the Linux kernel, you should try Gentoo. > > Good email, but you guys really really need to get > some real Linux knowledge because Red Hat is NOT the > only Linux! Well, sample this. I work at one of the largest data centers in India. I handle eight Linux/Unix servers in a single rack. None of them use Slackware, Gentoo or Debian. I also know almost everybody else who work on other racks. They either handle Solaris, AIX. HR-UX or Windows. I am yet to see any other distro apart from RH/SuSE running on any of the 2500+ servers running at our data center. Knowing Gentoo, Ubuntu, or any of the 10000 distros may make people call me a "linux geek", but it wont get me a job! If I don't have a job, I would be labeled a failure and nobody would be inspired to take up Linux as a career. Today, for what little my job is worth, I get tons of people asking me where I got my Redhat training from and whats the best route to a successful Linux career. And it feels great to see people thinking of the RHCE certification instead of the MCSE now! This is not meant to be a flame war. The beauty of Linux lies in its diversity. Appreciate the efforts people put into developing so many distros. Use them, tinker around with them, learn from them. But if you need a Linux job, concentrate on Red Hat at the moment. Later when Gentoo etc become marketeable, you can switch to them. No love lost. Master RedHat first, get a job. The job would obviously get you more exposure to linux applications. Then you can think of other distros. No RH, no job, no exposure. Jack of all, master of none. A simple fact, if you *love* your job, nobody can stop you from making it big. > Mrugesh > (In a cranky mood right now) Everybody has mood swings. Perhaps I'm mine now (!??)
