Uhm, ok. I see what you mean now... There's a big diff in number of files if
you compare the src/2.4 and src/2.6.16 directories. The only conclusion I can
make of this is that newer kernels contains more/all the changes needed for
the latest Wacom tablets therefor it's 'not needed'. You still need it, but
you don't have to recompile it with the versions from the linuxwacom package.
Just checked with the latest kernel (2.6.17.4) and it seem that it contains
everything from 0.7.4-X, so in that version you shouldn't need to replace
anything.

It's true.. It just requires a little trick after replugging it.. Before the
patch (as I understand it) you had to restart X to get it working again. With
the patch you only have to switch Virtual Terminal. It's better... But...

You have to dig though the mail archive to find more information about this
patch, here:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9535089&forum_id=19621

I think we have the same idea of how it *should* work.. Seamless hotplugging
without any tricks attached. The best would be if the X-server somehow could
detect the tablet and configure everything for the user, but that seems to be
pretty far away into the future..

This is one of the two reasons that I began writing the wacomproxy kernel
module. I'm still refining it and currently am making needed changes for a
later inclusion into the kernel.

But that's a bit in the future, what I'd like to have now is some feedback
from some of you about it. Once I have that and the response in not negative
and the module is stable (not in the sense of 'not crash-prone' but in amount
of changes I make to the source), I'll start throwing patches to
Ping/John/... and once it is included here, the kernel.

Check the mail archive if you'd like a brief history of it.
