I had a different problem when I was setting up my x41 tablet in Gentoo, so I'm not sure if it will help you. I had one of these 50/50 problems when starting up X on the first boot, where half the time the tablet would not work. It turned out that I had to make sure that the setserial command was run _before_ X started, so I had to add a couple of dependencies to my serial/gdm init.d files. I'm not sure how resume works with ACPI (I am using software suspend2 with an onResume command for setserial in my /etc/hibernate/common.conf), but if it is an intermittent problem, it might be a race condition sonewhere.
