I found the window manager problem - if ~/.xinitrc is present in a 
Gentoo system, the last line needs to be 'exec startkde' to get the KDE 
window manager.

This is not needed in Red Hat based distros.  Using the file from FC6 
caused looping in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, which, combined with the 
xsetwacom line produced by wacomcpl, produced endless error messages.
