there's another aspect of that. It's going to happen with or without
us. If it happens without us, then those that implement this stuff
will do so without OUR body of knowledge, and probably not only
implement this stuff wrong (in our eyes), but also go off and
recreate mistakes we consider obvious, because they won't have our
knowledge to work from.

I mean, all you have to do is look at onelist, or topica.com (which,
conflict of interest alert, I've had some peripheral involvment with
over the last few months), or makelist, or... -- to realize that
there ARE groups out there that are re-doing mail lists no matter
what we think.

Seems to me it's in the best interest of everyone if the people who
know most about mail lists drive the technology forward instead of
trying to hold it back, because otherwise, we'll be like the people
who built B-news, and now wonder why nobody listens to them about how
USENET ought to operate.

The technology doesn't care if any of us individually or as a group
stays behind or goes with it. But if you go with it, you have a
chance to influence it in positive ways. If you stay behind, all
you'll ahve is your old stuff, and the chance to complain about how
the good old days got screwed up by all this crap.... (like I do
about Usenet all the time... grin)

Now if you'll excuse me, I think this is the stop I pick up my
transfer downtown on....
