Actually, the link associates the early '80s with Dolby Stereo becoming common. 
 It actually first appeared in the '70s, and the link says it first came out in 
1975 (not sure if that's when it appeared in the first theater, however).  In 
fact, as the story goes back in 1978 a film maker you may have heard of named 
George Lucas used Dolby Stereo as an inducement to get theaters to show his new 
science fiction film, Star Wars.
