Right... consoles are successful because of user-friendliness, and
standardization is key. So even without the warranty issue, swap-out
won't work as that remove a standrd component for SOME users. Add-on
makes sense.

Oh I am sure they are just saying that now to get prospective
consumers to spend NOW (I mean xmas 2005) instead of waiting for the
next-gen hardware. A number of games depend on non-standard
accessories, e.g. Eye-toy. So I can imagine some producer in the
future will find economic reasons to break that "rule". Probably
someone will make both regular and HD versions of the same game.

Really? Do you mean the control sucks? Or there's issue with A/V
quality? Doesn''t MS advertise it as the media hub for the home?
Playing DVD should be a basic requirement right? Can it get any worse
than PS2 as a DVD player?

(actually the absolute worst DVD player I've ever used is my DVD
recorder, it works great as a poor man's TiVo and DVD recorder, but as
a player it's worse than the PS2)

Ahhh... a great man once say (something like) "what would people ever
do with a Whole megabyte of RAM?"

Sooner or later, some producer will decide to go all out on HD
cutscenes. 8.5 GB (double layer DVD) just won't give you a lot of
minutes of pre-rendered HD contents.

Hmm... I suspect MS would have fought hard to prevent that from ever
happening. If this one really turn out to be a good Gundam game, it
may just killl PS3 dead right there.

A strategy that may work very well. Barring any user-hostile
protection scheme, Blu-Ray is really better than HD-DVD. The only
downside is late-to-market and high cost. But the HD player market
must be penetrated from the top, so the target consumers will buy one
of each, no matter how expensive they are. (likewise most current 360
owner will also get PS3 and Nintendo Revolution, no matter the cost)
So it be a battle fought on technical ground and more importantly, who
controls what content (e.g. MS: Halo/ Sony: Gundam/ Nintendo: Mario
Bros)

You see I can't justify spending $300-500 on gaming hardware, since I
don't play enough hours of games. (I would have put the money on 0079
GKs, like the sweet sweet Doros)

But I can justify $500 on a Blu-Ray DVD player, even if the remote
control may suck (like the PS2 as a player). And if it plays some
next gen games too, well that's OK.

Well I am a Blu-ray fan, but I am getting nervous with Sony's track
record and strategy. Especially not a big fan of Sony's CEO.
